Author: Keith M. Bower
Publication Source: Minitab Inc., KeepingTAB #35, February 2002, pp. 10-11

Abstract

This paper addresses two statistics for use in a measurement system study involving attribute responses. The important difference between Kappa and Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance is highlighted

Notes

The inspiration for this short article was a paper (cited in the article) by David Futrell. His paper contained a very clear discussion of the errors in interpretation that may be made by using the inappropriate statistic. When teaching this topic, users tend to latch on very quickly to the importance in the difference, and how serious errors can be made in practice.
